Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School provides Preschool and Pre-kindergarten classes for children between the ages of 3 and 5. All children must be potty-trained before they begin school.
Our Lady's Preschool offers classes five days per week, 7:30 am to 2:30 pm, with an option for half days 7:30 am to 11:30 am. The students must be 3 years old by October 1 for preschool, or 4 years old by October 1 for pre-kindergarten.
The preschool and pre-kindergarten programs emphasize personal, social, academic, spiritual, creative and athletic development of each child.
In early preschool, your child will learn their academics, such as alphabet, numbers, shapes and colors, build social skills, develop healthy habits in personal hygiene and diet, participate in free and structured play, explore creative avenues in art, crafts, music, and drama. Nutrition break is a time for you child to sample tasty, healthy and, at times, foods that would qualify as works of art. Teachers and staff are well-versed with working with any child's allergies and food intolerances.
As your child progresses to pre-kindergarten, he or she will become immersed in an award-winning phonics program called Zoo-phonics. This phonics program is a two-year course, completing the next year in OLPH's kindergarten. Parents will recognize astounding results, as the kindergarteners lector for the Eighth Grade Mass at year-end. This program is, in part, responsible for the excellent Iowa Test reading scores our children earn in the elementary grades.
Quoted from the Zoo-phonics website:
"The principle of Zoo-phonics maximizes understanding, memory, utilization and transference to all areas of the reading, spelling and writing process in a playful and concrete manner."
"Zoo-phonics is a method developed to make children strong readers and spellers using a “phono” (hearing), “oral” (speaking), “visual” (seeing), “kinesthetic” (moving), and tactile (touching)—whole brain approach. Students actually learn the sounds of the alphabet and advanced phonemic concepts through an easily understood, concrete method of presentation."
"Zoo-phonics uses animals drawn in the shapes of the letters for ease in memory. A related body movement is given for each letter. This concrete approach cements the sounds to the shapes of the letters. Lowercase letters and their sounds are taught first (needed 95% of the time in text), capital letters and letter names are taught later."
"Zoo-phonics also provides a springboard for all other academia such as math, art, music, cooking/nutrition, social studies, science, grooming, physical education and sensory/drama."
Daycare is also provided (at extra cost) before and after classes. Pre-school and early elementary students are provided separate daycare facilities from the older students.
